Biography of Harry Belafonte
One of the most successful pop singers in history and dubbed the “King of Calypso” for popularizing the traditional Caribbean musical genre during the 1950’s. He is an actor, and above all else a humanitarian.
During the turbulent civil right movement Belafonte, was an avid contributor and often times a key financial supporter, having financed the Freedom Rides, and Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. Strongly influenced by his mentor fellow singer and activist Paul Robeson, Belafonte strongly fought against the racial injustice in America and the colonialism and suffrage in Africa.
