Biography of Zora Neale Hurston

Hurston was closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance and has influenced such writers as Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, Gayle Jones, Alice Walker, and Toni Cade Bambara.
A graduate of Howard University in 1918, she was one of the earliest pledges of Zeta Phi Beta. Upon graduation she was given a scholarship to Barnard College where she graduated in 1927 at the prime age of 36 and as the schools only African American student. Zora Neale Hurston is considered one of the pre-eminent writers of twentieth-century African-American literature.
